Boron Nitride in Metal Forming

Precision at high temperatures

In hot forming, metals are shaped into forms—some of which are highly complex—at high temperatures. Among the most demanding applications are those in the automotive industry, the aluminum and metal industries, and the glass industry. In these sectors, thermal stress, pressure, or tensile forces act directly on the tool surface, creating numerous challenges.

Boron nitride is used as an excellent lubricant and release agent, even at high temperatures, as a low-friction boron nitride coating, or as a powder for dry lubrication.

In addition, sintered boron nitride is becoming an increasingly important material. Henze BNP manufactures high-precision, self-lubricating, and non-stick tools and equipment components from sintered materials for metal and glass forming processes. Typical components include mold inserts, as well as contact, sliding, and guide elements.

Our Boron Nitride Recommendations

HeBoCoat® PL-E 125* is an ethanol-based boron nitride coating containing an inorganic binder. The coating adheres very well even at high temperatures, both to metallic substrates and to glass, ceramics and graphite. Thanks to its ethanol-based formulation, the substrate surface is wetted exceptionally well, resulting in rapid drying. Furthermore, the use of pure boron nitride produces coatings with good anti-seize and lubricating properties, thereby reducing wear and contact reactions.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Highly effective release agents and lubricants are essential for demanding forming processes such as drawing, rolling or pressing metals. Boron nitride is ideal for these conditions as it retains its excellent lubricating and separating effect even at extreme process temperatures and under high pressure, thus ensuring smooth, safe processes.

Our liquid coatings are primarily used in industrial forming technology. HeBoCoat® coatings and our special HeBoFill® powder are used. These products can be optimally applied and create an extremely stable layer between the tool and the component to be machined as an effective release agent and lubricant.

The use of HeBoCoat® and HeBoFill® not only ensures optimum lubrication and metal flow, but also protects the process from typical disruptive factors. Thanks to the special material properties of boron nitride, these process aids do not cause unwanted carburisation, short circuits or disruptive contamination during forming. This protects the tools, ensures high-quality workpieces and enables particularly clean working conditions.
