Boron nitride in sintering technology
In sintering technology, components are compacted and shaped at temperatures of up to 2200 °C. In this process, chemical reactions, friction, and thermal stress interact directly.
Traditional materials such as graphite, aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), or zirconia (ZrO₂) often cannot meet these requirements. Products made of hexagonal boron nitride, however, can! They combine reliable release properties, longer service life, and clean processing under extreme process conditions.
Typical applications:
- Boron nitride carrier plates, charging plates, and crucibles
- Coating of sintering molds, press dies, and support systems
- Separating and protective layers in the manufacture of high-performance ceramics, cemented carbides, or powder metallurgy components
- Boron nitride powder and additives for optimizing flow behavior and reducing friction during compaction
- Embedding powder as a loading aid
Our Boron Nitride Recommendations
HeBoCoat ® PL-W 250
HeBoCoat® PL-W 250* is a highly concentrated, water-based boron nitride coating. In addition, refractory binders ensure good adhesion to the substrate – even at high temperatures. Due to its high viscosity and high-performance material properties, this boron nitride coating is particularly suitable for use in aluminium foundries. Among other things, HeBoCoat® PL-W 250 effectively prevents the molten metal from adhering to plant equipment or components.
Typical areas of application
- in the continuous casting sector, for coating, for example, casting tables, distributors, SKIM frames, hot-end rings and tools
- Coating of ladles and troughs, and much more
Product Highlights
- optimal release and lubrication properties
- hoher Feststoffgehalt
- can be diluted with water
- high temperature resistance
- minimal tool wear
- High production output thanks to extended equipment service life
- maximum effect with economical dosing
- chemically inert – it is not wetted by most molten metals and slags
- The product can be applied by spraying or brushing

HeBoCoat ® PL-E 125
HeBoCoat® PL-E 125* is an ethanol-based boron nitride coating containing an inorganic binder. The coating adheres very well even at high temperatures, both to metallic substrates and to glass, ceramics and graphite. Thanks to its ethanol-based formulation, the substrate surface is wetted exceptionally well, resulting in rapid drying. Furthermore, the use of pure boron nitride produces coatings with good anti-seize and lubricating properties, thereby reducing wear and contact reactions.
Typical areas of application
- Release agents for sintering, welding and brazing applications; anti-spatter
- Release agents and lubricants in glass processing
- Protection of graphite components during silicification
- Coating of crucibles, nozzles and plugs in the foundry sector
Product Highlights
- quick-drying
- Excellent separating, lubricating and protective properties, even at high temperatures
- good surface adhesion
- clean welds and solder joints
- High production output thanks to the extended service life of the plant
- greater cleanliness compared with conventional release agents
- dry lubricating film – no oils, greases or silicones
- maximum effect with economical dosing
- effective protection against metal splashes
* HeBoCoat Power Line – Ethanol BN-Content ⋅10
HeBoCoat ® PL-W 300
HeBoCoat® PL-W 300* is a water-based boron nitride coating with a solids content of 30 per cent. The boron nitride used is of high purity, has good crystallinity and a high degree of fineness, ensuring optimum surface coverage. An organic binder ensures good adhesion and good workability. Special additives improve wetting of the substrate surface and prevent rapid settling.
Typical areas of application
- Release agents for graphite in siliconisation processes
- Protection against carburisation in sintering and pressure sintering applications
- Release agents in coating processes
Product Highlights
- good surface adhesion
- optimal release and lubrication properties
- The coating is ready for use
* HeBoCoat Power Line – Wasser-BN-Gehalt ⋅10

Frequently Asked Questions
What advantages does HeBoCoat offer in sintering technology?
In sintering processes, HeBoCoat® coatings—applied, for example, to graphite sintering carriers—reliably prevent carburization of the components and ensure that the sintered material separates cleanly from the substrate. For pressure sintering on small surfaces, special HeBoCoat® sprays are also available, which provide the necessary release effect quickly and precisely.
Why is boron nitride an ideal material for sintering technology?
Sintering processes take place at extremely high temperatures and usually in a protected atmosphere. Boron nitride is ideal for these harsh conditions as it combines high precision, clean processes and a long service life for the sintering and processing aids used. It is extremely temperature-resistant and chemically stable, thus ensuring the efficiency and quality of the entire process chain..
What solutions does Henze BNP offer specifically for pressure sintering and powder metallurgy?
For pressure sintering, particularly on smaller surfaces, our HeBoCoat® sprays (aerosols) are ideal for quickly and easily achieving the required release effect. In powder metallurgy – for example, in metal atomisation – durable nozzles made from solid HeBoSint® (such as our high-performance ceramic SL-N 300) are also used. These guarantee a high purity of the metal powder, significantly reduce waste and enable the shape and particle size distribution of the powder to be precisely controlled.
