Boron nitride in welding and brazing
In addition to suspensions, machined boron nitride components are used wherever high levels of protection are required. Typical applications include insulating inserts in welding fixtures, welding nozzles, guide elements in high-temperature environments, protective plates in soldering systems, and positioning components that come into direct contact with molten metal.
Boron nitride combines high thermal shock resistance with low wettability by metals. At the same time, the material remains electrically insulating. This prevents short circuits in automated resistance welding systems and enhances process reliability.
Typical applications:
- Zur Stabilisierung von Punktschweißprozessen, z.B. in der Automobilindustrie
- For copper and cell contact processes, e.g., in the field of electric mobility
- Durable welding or brazing fixtures in mechanical and plant engineering
- For high-precision soldering applications in the aerospace industry
- For aluminum brazing processes in heat exchanger and tube manufacturing
Our Boron Nitride Recommendations
HeBoSint ® CL-N 200
Thanks to the optimal ratio of silicon-aluminum oxynitride to hexagonal boron nitride, the HeBoSint® CL-N 200 composite ceramic offers an excellent balance between improved wear resistance and, at the same time, excellent release properties due to its relatively high boron nitride content. This combination also results in outstanding electrical and thermal properties. Consequently, the material is recommended for many electrical insulation and casting applications, such as PVD shielding frames, as well as for nozzles and crucibles in metal casting.
Product Highlights
- Excellent release properties when used with metals
- Easy to clean
- Excellent electrical insulation properties
- Excellent thermal shock resistance
- Very good thermal conductivity
- low material weight
- Improved mechanical properties compared to pure boron nitride
HeBoSint ® CL-Z 200
Dripping solder can compromise the soldering result, as it tends to stick to soldering pads and fixtures during dip or vacuum soldering. A soldering pad made of HeBoSint® provides a solution to this problem.
Product Highlights at a Glance
- Excellent resistance to thermal cycling
- Excellent electrical insulation
- good release properties
- No wetting by most molten metals
- easy to clean
HeBoCoat ® PL-E 125
HeBoCoat® PL-E 125* is an ethanol-based boron nitride coating containing an inorganic binder. The coating adheres very well even at high temperatures, both to metallic substrates and to glass, ceramics and graphite. Thanks to its ethanol-based formulation, the substrate surface is wetted exceptionally well, resulting in rapid drying. Furthermore, the use of pure boron nitride produces coatings with good anti-seize and lubricating properties, thereby reducing wear and contact reactions.
Typical areas of application
- Release agents for sintering, welding and brazing applications; anti-spatter
- Release agents and lubricants in glass processing
- Protection of graphite components during silicification
- Coating of crucibles, nozzles and plugs in the foundry sector
Product Highlights
- quick-drying
- Excellent separating, lubricating and protective properties, even at high temperatures
- good surface adhesion
- clean welds and solder joints
- High production output thanks to the extended service life of the plant
- greater cleanliness compared with conventional release agents
- dry lubricating film – no oils, greases or silicones
- maximum effect with economical dosing
- effective protection against metal splashes

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the common challenges in industrial welding and brazing?
During industrial welding, welding spatter very often accumulates on welding nozzles, workpieces, system components and protective devices. These hard deposits severely impair the functionality of the systems, as they hinder the gas flow and wire feed, for example. An exactly comparable problem caused by unwanted spatter build-up also arises in soldering technology.
How do boron nitride products prevent these unwanted deposits?
Boron nitride is extremely temperature-stable, chemically inert and acts naturally as a highly effective barrier layer. Through the targeted use of liquid HeBoCoat® sprays and suspensions, vulnerable surfaces are reliably protected against the adhesion of welding and solder spatter. Furthermore, components made of solid boron nitride (such as special sintered grades) are used directly as welding nozzles, soldering pads or mounts for induction heating coils due to their heat resistance.
What specific advantages does the use of boron nitride offer in welding and brazing?
The use of HeBoCoat® coatings saves valuable working time and costs, as it eliminates the need for time-consuming rework and the laborious removal of adhering spatter. Furthermore, the protective film significantly extends the service life of expensive welding nozzles and soldering tips. These properties also offer benefits in related fields such as laser processing: here, the boron nitride layer provides additional protection against oxidation and soot marks, and reduces burr formation, as molten residues can flow away much more easily thanks to the non-stick effect.
